Having already given audiences the chance to catch up on the acidic cynicism of Veep and the quiet desperation of Enlightened, HBO has chosen its next recipient of a marathon: Boardwalk Empire. Beginning on Monday, July 9th at 10:00, the network will be replaying the first two seasons of the award-winning drama on a one-episode-a-night-basis. For the following month, every Monday-Friday, you can expect to follow Nucky Thompson, prominent political figure in Atlantic City, in his attempt to retain and attain power and prestige. The replay is scheduled to last until August 9th.
In other Boardwalk Empire news, according to Canada.com, creator Terence Winter (The Sopranos) has expressed a desire for the show to have a six year run. Though hype has cooled a bit on the show, it’s never been a ratings juggernaut a’la True Blood, so the continued critical acclaim and awards discussion should help it to easily make it to the six year mark. Thus far in its run, Boardwalk Empire has won at least one of each of the following awards: Writer’s Guild, Director’s Guild, Grammy, Emmy, Golden Globe, SAG, AFI, and Visual Effects Society, with the show likely to pick up plenty more Emmy nominations in July.
The third season of Boardwalk Empire will be introducing at least one new character, as Bobby Cannavale will be joining the cast as the latest rival for Nucky. Though the treasurer managed to dispatch the ringleader of the threat against him in the season two finale, it looks like there’s no shortage of men ready to make a go for the Atlantic City throne. It may be good to be the king, but Nucky’s castle is still under siege with no sign of surrender anytime soon.
Boardwalk Empire doesn’t have a premiere date for its upcoming third season, though there’s been talk of bringing it back on September 23rd with Treme following a week later. You can check out a third season preview here.
Are you looking forward to the next season of Boardwalk Empire? How do you think the show handles the fallout from Nucky’s actions in the finale? Will you be tuning into any replay episodes?
