Breaking News: Doctor Who’s Sixth Series To Be Split In Two!

This is what happens when you stay up late. Good news comes to you!

Digital Spy just exclusively broke from the Edinburgh TV Festival that the next series of Doctor Who will be split into two parts with the first half airing in Spring 2011 and the second airing in Fall 2011. The reason for the split? Two words:

Game. Changer.

Giddy yet?

According to a statement released by the BBC, the spilt was a request from current showrunner Steven Moffat, who will introduce the “game changing” event at the end of the spring run of episodes, leaving the fans and audiences “on the edge of their seats, until the autumn to find out what happens.”

There will be 7 episodes in the Spring with the final 6 episodes following suit in the fall. No word has been given on when the episodes will air in the U.S. or if the U.S. will be treated with the same break or if we will get all the episodes in one swell swoop. If anything, this news can be seen in two ways 1) being with open arms and an open mind or 2) with complete and utter dire. I welcome the former, but Mr. Moffat and company will have to bring the goods for this to pay off.
