BTJA Announces Most Exciting New Television Series Honorees – Alcatraz, Falling Skies, Smash, and Others, Highlighted

Members of the Broadcast Television Journalists Association–or, BTJA, Pronounced “Bet-cha”–have followed up the 2011 Critic’s Choice nominations by choosing a select number of pilots from the upcoming television season as “Most Exciting New Series” honorees. BTJA members were able to choose from pilots that were distributed to members from virtually every network and cable channel with a pony in the sweeps race, and the shows that were chosen came with some familiar names attached to them. Here is a full list of the Honorees for those looking to get a jump on DVR programming.

LOS ANGELES (June 9, 2011) – The Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) today announced that eight new shows will be honored in the Most Exciting New Series category at the inaugural Critics’Choice Television Awards. The Most Exciting New Series category recognizes shows premiering after June 1, 2011. It was judged by the BTJA membership based on pilots and early episodes.

The Critics’Choice Television Awards luncheon – hosted by Cat Deeley – will be streamed live from the Beverly Hills Hotel on June 20, 2011 on VH1.com. It will be telecast on ReelzChannel premiering on June 22.

‘This is a fun category involving a bit of guesswork on our part,’said Joey Berlin, acting president, BTJA. ‘A great pilot doesn’t always yield a great series, but it’s interesting to see which shows have jumped out and captured our fancy at this early stage. No doubt being a Critics’Choice as Most Exciting New Series will mean a lot to the creators and producers and could give these shows a nice boost.’

The Most Exciting New Series honorees are:

Alcatraz – FOX – Warner Bros.
Apartment 23 – ABC – 20th Century Fox
Awake – NBC – 20th Century Fox
Falling Skies – TNT – DreamWorks
New Girl – FOX – 20th Century Fox
Ringer – CW -Warner Bros
Smash – NBC – DreamWorks/Universal Media
Terra Nova – FOX – 20th Century Fox

In addition to recognizing the Most Exciting New Series honorees, the Critics’Choice Television Awards will present awards for outstanding programs and performances in Drama, Comedy, Reality and Talk Show.

Cable and satellite network REELZCHANNEL, available in more than 58 million homes, will broadcast the Critics’Choice Television Awards premiering on June 22 at 8 p.m. ET and repeating at 11 p.m. and 2 a.m. ET. The Awards will be rebroadcast throughout the week. VH1.com will exclusively live stream the awards show on June 20 and will make select footage available for on-demand viewing following the star-studded event. VH1.com will also offer celebrity interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and an opportunity for fans to interact with celebrities backstage with its “fan-cam” stream. Bob Bain will executive produce the show for Bob Bain Productions.
