Bunheads Preview: A Bunheads Dictionary and Career Milestones Aplenty

There are certain things that one may need to know going into the first season of Bunheads. You have the premise (directionless dancer elopes to small town) and the impressive cast (including Tony winner Sutton Foster), of course, but there’s a whole subset of ballet-related terminology that will be spouted pretty freely. Can’t tell your pirouettes from your pas de bourrees? Don’t worry. ABC Family has you covered.

The cast of Bunheads briefly goes over a few terms to know going into the pilot in the just-released featurette below. Everything from the barre to grand battements are covered and though it doesn’t get that in depth, it’s a nice starting point for anybody not that familiar with the art of ballet. There’ll likely be a lot of learning-by-seeing involved in Bunheads, considering a lot of the ballet terms come while the movement is occurring, but knowing a little going into things can only help you pick up on everything else that much faster.

In the sneak peek, meanwhile, former showgirl Michelle impressed four young dancers (Boo, Sasha, Ginny, and Melanie) with her American Ballet Theater pedigree and Vegas career that was left behind. Though the four have been dancing for years, having someone of Michelle’s accomplishments talking to them about the field and imparting a little knowledge they wouldn’t have gotten otherwise gives them a pretty good leap forward toward obtaining a dance career. If they know a little something extra going into the next phase of their career, maybe they’ll be better prepared to deal with the ups and downs of every plie, tombe, and eleve.

Bunheads premieres Monday, June 11th at 9:00 on ABC Family following The Secret Life of the American Teenager. You can check out an on-air promo, three sneak peeks, and spoilers for the first three episodes here, here, and here.
