It’s kind of cool that back in 2011 two of this year’s nominees for best actress in a motion picture in fact shared screen time in the same movie. When Saoirse Ronan was only 17 she starred in the action thriller Hanna. Who else starred in that film? None other than Cate Blanchett. Erica Bana was the lead but I felt Blanchett stole that movie when she was on screen. If you haven’t seen Hanna then you must.
The movie follows the life of a sixteen-year-old girl who was raised by her father to be the perfect assassin. She is dispatched on a mission across Europe, tracked by a ruthless intelligence agent and her operatives. Blanchett plays the ruthless agent. Ronan nails the part as the emotionless and deadly Hanna. I’ve never really seen a role like this before in film. Personally I think that Ronan and Blanchett could have been nominated back then but it’s interesting that their paths have crossed this year and in the Oscar’s no less.
I wonder if the two have kept in touch since filming Hanna. Who knows if that will even get a mention tonight. But I felt it deserved some recognition. I’ve also attached a clip up top of when Hanna initially escapes and the hunt for her begins. This scene absolutely rocks.
