The search for the Last Daughter of Krypton is over: CBS and Warner Bros. TV announced today that Glee star Melissa Benoist has landed the lead part in Greg Berlanti’s (Arrow, The Flash) and Ali Adler’s (The New Normal) upcoming superhero drama Supergirl. Benoist, a relatively new face on the small screen, is most well-known for her role as Marley Rose from the FOX musical series’ fourth and fifth seasons.
Benoist’s casting comes a week after CBS’s executive session at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, where network president Nina Tassler stated that they were looking for a lesser-known actress that “could carry the show” and be an “every woman.”
Aside from her series regular role on Glee, Benoist is still relativity new in the TV business with one-time guest spots on shows like The Good Wife, Blue Bloods, Homeland, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and Law & Order: SVU. She also recently co-starred in the Oscar-nominated film Whiplash.
Benoist isn’t the first Glee actor to land a leading superhero role, as last year Grant Gustin, who played the villainous Sebastian Smythe, was cast back in 2013 as Barry Allen in The CW’s The Flash, which has been a major hit for the network with Gustin also becoming one of the breakout stars of this TV season.
Now that Supergirl has its lead, it will be interesting to see who the show casts around Benoist. Supporting characters that will be joining Kara on the CBS series include Alex Danvers, Jimmy Olsen, Cat Grant, Winslow Schott and Hank Henshaw.
