Concert for George Harrison is Coming to the Big Screen

Fans of the amazing Beatles, and especially of the late great George Harrison, will be happy to hear that a full-length motion picture that presents the tribute concert, “Concert for George,” has been produced and started its much-anticipated run in 75 North American theaters. The release date was February 20, which is just five days prior to what would’ve been George’s 75th birthday had he been living today.

David Leland Directed the Film

This amazing documentary is brought to the big screen by Concord Music and Abramorama and features Paul McCartney, Dhani Harrison, Joe Brown, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynne, Billy Preston, Jools Holland, Tom Petty, Anoushka and Ravi Shankar, and many more. It was directed by David Leland. You probably know some of his very talented works, which include HBO’s “Band Of Brothers”, “Wish You Were Here”, and “Handle With Care”, a video featuring the Traveling Wilburys.

 A Collaboration of Talent

This inspiring concert in George Harrison’s honor features some truly remarkable renditions of many songs that are among the 20th century’s most powerful music. They include Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers rendition of “Taxman”, and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, which features Eric Clapton’s incomparable guitar riffs plus Ringo Starr on the drums and Paul McCartney on the piano. In addition, other fantastic performances include Anoushka Shankar and Jeff Lynne covering “The Inner Light”. To round out the talent of this concert-of-the-century, George Harrison’s fellow collaborator and lifelong friend, Jeff Lynne, produced all of the concert’s audio elements and Eric Clapton was in charge of overseeing everything as the concert’s Musical Director.

How it All Started

A year after George Harrison died of lung cancer at the age of 58, his wife Olivia and his friend Eric Clapton put together a tribute in his honor. That was on November 29, 2002, and the performance tribute took place at Royal Albert Hall in London. And, what a momentous evening it was, filled with George’s beautiful songs and all of the music that he loved so much. As amazing as it was, unfortunately not everybody around the world had the opportunity to enjoy that momentous coming together of all of George Harrison’s talented friends to pay tribute to him. But, now everybody does finally have the chance to join in and remember George Harrison and all of his wonderful music, while also having the opportunity to actually see just how much everyone loved him. From his band-mates like Ringo and Paul to iconic musicians like Clapton, they all come together to make a momentous concert turned into a film for the ages for everyone to remember.
