We may be in the very, very early stages of the fall television season, but it’s never too early to start thinking about shows airing next spring, right? Well, regardless of your answer/preference, Starz has unveiled the first official teaser for Da Vinci’s Demons, a historical fantasy that follows a 25-year-old Leonardo da Vinci as he becomes the revolutionary that most know him as today. Through his contributions to art, architecture, and science, da Vinci solidified himself as one of the greatest thinkers the world has ever known, but what about Renaissance-era Florence got him to that point?
The teaser for the upcoming show doesn’t offer anything in the way of new footage. We don’t get to see young Leonardo (Tom Riley) in action or any hint of the extravagant Florentine set, which was built in Wales for the show’s production. Rather, it hints that all the “untold” stories about the Renaissance man’s background will be coming to light in the series, which will take place around 1479-1480. The series is rumored to, in addition to covering the formative years of da Vinci’s genius, be covering the Sons of Mithras, a mysterious cult purported to be centered in Rome.
In addition to Riley, Da Vinci’s Demons stars Laura Haddock as Leonardo’s mistress Lucrezia Donati, Lara Pulver as Lorenzo Medici’s politically-minded wife Clarice Orsini, Allan Corduner as Leonardo’s mentor Verrochio, and Eros Vlahos as founder of modern political science Niccolo Machiavelli. The co-production between FX UK and Starz will be written by David S. Goyer, whose credits include the upcoming Man of Steel, Batman Begins, and all 22 episodes of Flash Forward.
Da Vinci’s Demons comes to Starz in spring 2013, likely taking over for Spartacus once the historical epic finishes its run.
Will you be watching Da Vinci’s Demons when it premieres? How do you think the show will separate itself from other historically-based television? What are you expecting the show to cover in its first 8 episodes?
