Dancing With the Stars Season 20 Episode 6 Review: “Spring Break Night”

Dancing With the Stars

Last night was Spring Break Night on Dancing With the Stars, and I initially just thought of it as any other theme night. However, I started watching the dances and then I really got into it! Like Nastia showed a different side of herself last week in Disney Week, a lot of dancers showed off a different types of dance or style that we haven’t really seen before or that they’ve improved on, and they were all, as Len put it, “Cool by the pool.” This week also introduced the team dances, because even though they’re always pressed for time, they have enough space for two whole dance routines!

The show was broken up into two rounds: the individual dances and the team dances. As I said, the teams were exceptional tonight. Rumerand Val danced to “Bootylicious,” and while the judges thought it didn’t meet their expectations, it was fun! I know that I have seen Rumer dancing to fast, upbeat songs before, but she always does so classically. In last night’s dances, both the individual one and the team, she was able to dance like the 90s pop stars did. I’ve liked her in the past and I really liked her last night.

Next, Chris and Witney pulled almost a 180 from last week. Then, his leg was ready to give out on him. Maybe he doesn’t have “musicality,” as one judge put it, but last night, he knocked it out of the park. He got the elegant dance, had a smile on his face, and enjoyed himself. Julianne even added onto her comments, telling him, “You were so confident and you were so there!”

Additionally, the couples proved just how well they know each other this week on Dancing With the Stars. Nastia had been talking about how all of her traveling and school and practice are finally catching up with her. First of all, you couldn’t tell by it the scores! It shows how much confidence and faith Derek has in her that he knows that, despite how little time they have together, she’ll do her best and work her hardest to get the dances right. Allison also showed how much trust she has in Riker, as she doesn’t have them perform a song because she thought it wasn’t right for him. That meant increased pressure for her because she had a smaller amount to time to choreograph a new dance, but she stuck to her guns for Riker.

Soon, it became time for the team dances. In these team dances, all the couples on the team dance together, then each individual pair steps in for a few seconds, and, finally, the team wraps finishes the dance together. First up, we had Team YOLO with Nastia, Noah, Willow, and Robert. They danced to “Wipeout,” and they did a band/beach mash-up. Very impressive but I noticed something when I was watching Noah and Sharna dance together. They’re very good together. They work well together. In his video, Sharna said she couldn’t give him simple stuff or they’d be sent home. As I was watching them, I’m not sure how much more he can do. Granted, he can do a whole lot, but when you’re missing two limbs, there are limitations. There’s no way around it. I would like to see him move on in the competition. They’re one of the pairs I’d like to see go all the way and win the Mirror Ball. I’d just like to see what else Sharna can come up in the rest of the season that isn’t just ‘simple stuff.’

After Team YOLO finished, we then had Team Trouble. They had a Breakfast Club detention dance party with Patti as the teacher dancing her way into things. They were exciting, if only for the shock that the viewers got when Patti went from wearing that button-up black suit to a red dress!

At this point in the competition, I have my favorites, those who I believe deserve to win, and others who I’d be fine with seeing go home. When it got down to the final two couples and all of my favorites were safe for one more week, I thought it didn’t matter who goes. Then, Tom said the couple leaving this week was Patti and Artem, and I was crushed. I didn’t know why. I didn’t know if I just thought Patti deserved to stay longer or if Robert should have gone home this week. Who knows? All I do know is that I was very disappointed that Patti was sent home last night. I had a connection with her I hadn’t even realized I’d made to begin with.

Last night on Dancing With the Stars, the results were tallied first from the individual dances and then combined with the team dance. Here they are:

  1. Riker & Allison- 76
  2. Nastia & Derek- 73
  3. Willow & Mark- 73
  4. Rumer & Val- 71
  5. Chris & Witney- 70
  6. Patti & Artem- 68
  7. Noah & Sharna- 68
  8. Robert & Kym- 67
