TNT Has released a new extended preview of the hotly anticipated Science Fiction actioner Falling Skies, and alien-invasion aficionados should be very pleased. For starters, the tone and atmosphere is very polished and cinematic – granted, that is par for the course these days but it hasn’t stopped efforts like “V” from looking slightly campy at times. Falling Skies looks very gritty and realistic, and the all CGI aliens are something to behold – arachnoid-slash-crustacean mash-ups exquisitely rendered down to every last bizarre and foreboding detail. The Spielberg touch is particularly evident in the fact that the aliens, for some unknown reason, are particularly menacing to children – tending to kill the adults and kidnap the children to convert them into pint sized meat puppets.
This latest clip from TNT sets all of this up and more, introducing Moon Bloodgood as the tough surrogate mother to an increasing collection of orphaned, or partially orphaned, children, and Noah Wylie as a tough resistance fighter. Will Patton makes a memorable appearance as a grizzled veteran type dripping with all of the marks of his expert character work. The real star here is the aforementioned atmospherics, and the nasty aliens themselves. If this little taste of warfare is representative of what Falling Skies has on tap, TNT may have found it’s Walking Dead, a highly effective entry into a pop culture genre wired directly to the zeitgeist.
