The entire country these days, and especially Hollywood, is a-buzz about sexual harassment and abuse, some of which was alleged to have occurred almost 50 years ago. We all know it’s a horrific thing, no matter how you look at it but come on, folks, doesn’t it seem to be going a bit too far? Now, people like the oh-so-talented Meryl Streep are being vilified for allegedly just knowing about these incidents and it appears to be nothing more than a political ploy. What’s next?
Former Weinstein Assistant- Zelda Perkins
That being said, it is a good thing that individuals are feeling free to speak out about these issues and one of them who seems to have a lot to say about it is Zelda Perkins. She is the former assistant to movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, whom she calls some very colorful names like “repulsive monster.” She worked for him in the 1990s, resigning when one of her colleagues accused him of attempted rape, which of course he denied.
But, then in 1998, she was asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement in exchange for $168k. That settlement was aimed at preventing her from disclosing any facts about the “alleged” sexual assault. Now, she has broken that confidentiality agreement by detailing everything that happened and how difficult it has been to keep quiet about it for the last 20 years. She described his inappropriate behavior and need for domination. She also told her interviewer about how she was traumatized after she confronted Weinstein regarding the rape claim.
Five Things You Didn’t Know
So, we seem to know quite a bit about Zelda Perkins as related to her time during and since working for Weinstein. But, here are five things that perhaps you didn’t know about Zelda Perkins:
Weinstein- A Master Manipulator
It may come as a surprise to some that Zelda characterized Weinstein as being a power addict rather than a sex addict when she was interviewed. She also said that he was a person who was a stimulating and brilliant person to be around. But, she added that he also had constant mood swings and was a master manipulator.
Perkins was warned about the behavior that she could expect from Weinstein way back when she first started working for him. A woman told her never to sit on the couch with him but to always choose an armchair to sit in instead in his presence. According to Perkins, she did warn others about Weinstein’s behavior but actually thought that they might be safe. She found out later that she was wrong.
No Other Options
Perkins agreed to the settlement based upon the advice of her attorneys who said that she really didn’t have any other option. Agt this point, it isn’t really clear what legal repercussions she might be facing for breaking the confidentiality agreement related to that settlement. The agreement also involved a clause where Weinstein was required to get therapy. Perkins said that she didn’t know if it ever happened.
A Pattern of Bad Behavior
Although most of her disclosure involves another employee who was raped by Weinstein, Perkins herself had several close calls herself. The first experience occurred when he requested that she give him a massage. At the time, all he was wearing was his underwear. She declined, however, the behavior continued and was how he acted whenever she was alone with him, she stated.
Perkins also stated that she had to wake him on numerous mornings at his hotel and he was always trying to pull her into bed with him. It would appear that she’s lucky she wasn’t raped as well. She has waived her right to anonymity and doesn’t seem to be too concerned about legal issues related to the confidentiality agreement and settlement. Meanwhile, Weinstein has been denying the non-consensual sex allegations in spite of the fact that he’s been accused by dozens of women. He’s currently under criminal investigation in NY, LA, and the UK.
