I never really believed this was going to happen, as Friday Night Lights ended on a perfectly fine note, and there was no reason to think it needed to return for a movie. I mean, I’d watch it for another six seasons at least, but a movie? Not so much.
Peter Berg is finally sinking the idea once and for all that there could possibly be a Friday Night Lights movie. Now obviously there WAS a Friday Night Lights movie before, which Kyle Chandler (Coach Taylor) referenced last year:
“My general attitude about Friday Night Lights is, it was a great movie with Billy Bob and it was a great TV show,” Chandler told MTV News last year. “They ended it at exactly the right time and in exactly the right way, as well.”
And now in present day, Berg has put the rumors to bed once and for all:
“There’s not gonna be a movie,” Berg told Collider. “We talked about it, some people thought it was a good idea, some didn’t; I’ve come to believe it’s probably not a good idea and I seriously doubt it’s gonna happen.”
Agreed. Friday Night Lights worked because it allowed us to build up characters over months and years. What’s one two hour movie based around one hurried season or one big game really going to add to the series at this point when it ended pretty conclusively? Better to let sleeping dogs lie, and let the show be remembered as one of the all-time greats.
