General Hospital: Week In Review, August 6-10, 2012

General Hospital was a week of triangles August 6-10… John/Sam/Jason, Todd/Carly/Johnny Z, Elizabeth/Ewen/Jason, Alexis/Jerry/Jerry’s ego…

After Todd (Roger Howarth) sends a picture of John (Michael Easton) and Sam (Kelly Monaco) kissing to Natalie, Clint files for a restraining order on Natalie’s behalf.  As John and Natalie were never married, the restraining order prevents John from seeing Natalie and son, Liam. John lands in jail after he pummels Todd in front of Sam.

Sam retains her mother as counsel for John, and the women arrive at the PCPD on the heels of John’s arrest.  John is in hell, not from impending incarceration, but from being handcuffed in the chair next to Heather Webber.  Death-and-destruction-Heather (Robin Mattson) is being transported back to the Ferncliff asylum, but not before taunting Sam and Alexis with information about Sam’s presumably dead baby.

Dante visits Todd’s office in an attempt to persuade the publisher from pressing charges against McBain, which Todd gleefully refuses to do.  After Carly’s (Laura Wright) attempt to convince Todd to drop the charges, the magnate yields to Starr (Kristen Alderson), who pleads John’s case to her father.

Jason arrives at the lake house just in time to see Sam comforting John, walking in on his wife in yet another embrace with the Llanview lieutenant.   Jason tries to convince Sam to give their marriage another try, but Sam cannot forgive him for the death of her baby.  When Sam asks her husband to accept her friendship with John McBain, the couple takes a another step toward divorce.

Jason and Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst) spend time with Elizabeth’s baby at Kelly’s, and Jason warns Ewen (Nathin Butler) to tread lightly with Elizabeth’s emotions.  The muscular mob enforcer and the non-pugilistic Spinelli have a hysterical sparring session at the gym.  Portrayers Steve Burton and Bradford Anderson obviously reveled in the fun.  Watch for the editor’s skillful maneuvering around the laughter behind the actors’ eyes.

In addition to motivating Todd to release charges, Starr’s week brought about a new dynamic between her and roommate, Trey (Erik Valdez).  As the younger Scully/Mitchell and Starr bond over a secret, a wary Johnny Zacchara (Brandon Barash) interrupts the pair.  Protective of Starr after inadvertently killing her boyfriend and daughter, Johnny Z is suspicious of Trey’s motives with good reason.  JZ is summoned by the elder Scully (Richard Steinmetz) for a sit-down at Joe’s jail cell.

Over at the Metro Court, Johnny’s relationship with Carly heads for rocky waters as Carly does her level best to convince Todd that he has a friend in her.  Signs indicate that the pair is embarking on the next step of their blossoming romance.

Back at General Hospital, Patrick (Jason Thompson) continues therapy fo his addiction, while Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) suffers hallucinations following her forced injection of LSD.  Whether it is a flash of psychic abilities or a mother’s intuition, Olivia thinks Lulu (Julie Marie Berman) is pregnant and may not be wrong.  Lulu and Maxie (Jen Lilley) skate Dante’s (Dominic Zamprogna) questions as Maxie insists that Lulu take a pregnancy test.

Nearby at General Hospital, Kate (Kelly Sullivan) asks Ewen about a possible resurgent of her “Connie” personality, while Sonny is at Kelly’s, seeing Kristina’s advice about proposing to Kate. Sonny later escorts Kate away from General Hospital, assumedly to propose marriage,

Joe goes ballistic after Sonny has Milo (Drew Cheetwood) abduct Trey, complete with a bag over Trey’s head.  Sonny intimidates Trey in the boxing ring leaving Kristina’s new squeeze with a few bruises.  Maurice Benard took the scenes, which would have been a serious situation on another show, to comedic delight with lighthearted deftness.

Also mining comedy from what would have been a horrible real-life situation were actors Nancy Lee Grahn and Sebastian Roche when Jerry kidnaps Alexis.  When Alexis’s phone is disabled, Jerry explains that he did not damage her cell; he simply moved the satellite that enables cell communication.  He has missed the way Alexis veers “between courtroom detachment and borderline hysteria” as she asks if he plans to shoot her or hang her from her thumbs.  Hysterical laughter: table for two, please.
