One of America’s most simultaneously adored and reviled media personalities is making yet another career transition. Former CNN and current Fox News talking head Glenn Beck will be exiting his talk show on the network, according to Deadline. Effective later this year, Beck’s move won’t take him away from Fox News completely, as his production company already has several projects in the works for Fox. Beck has yet to announce his next move or if he plans to stay in television.
Beck’s show has experienced some serious ratings declines this season, though his show is still highly rated. He has had successful runs on radio and television with 14 books to his name and multiple live stage shows. His increasingly manic and over-the-top presence on his show has drawn a mixture of criticism and parody from members of the media, most notably Jon Stewart’s parody on The Daily Show.
While I disagree whole-heartedly with Beck’s politics and the manner in which he presents himself, the man has an audience, as fringe as they may be, and I don’t think we’ve seen the last of him. I personally see Beck pulling a Charlie Sheen and doing a “tour”, at least until he figures out his next TV gig or his appeal starts wearing off, but if there’s anybody whose mind I don’t quite understand, it’s Beck’s and you never know what he’l pull next.
What do you think about Beck’s move? Who do you think Fox will bring in to “replace” him? Do you think Beck will retreat from his extremist rhetoric and try to become even an inch more independent, or do you think he’s too far gone to credibly pull this off?
