As an unabashed Lord of the Rings freak, I was excited to hear that HBO was creating a series based on George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy saga A Song of Ice and Fire. While, like LOTR, it takes place in a fantasy realm…living in ‘Westeros’ ain’t no fantasy. The Shire this is not. I’m currently halfway through the first novel A Game of Thrones (which, as I’m sure you can tell, is the name HBO is using for the series) and it’s already abundantly clear to me that the world Martin has created is unlike any other. It’s gritty. It’s real. It’s very, very dark. I won’t get into details, but just know that some very disturbing things happen. It’s a good thing this show’s on HBO otherwise much of what makes A Game of Thrones so unique would be lost on network television.
If this latest teaser trailer is any indication, the series looks like it’s in good hands. The one minute appetizer is as creepy as it is mysterious, just like the novel. It doesn’t show much substance, but it exemplifies some of the themes that the show will deal with — backstabbing, betrayal, lust, power, greed, redemption. Watch the trailer below and see for yourself. If you ask me, it looks like HBO has created another masterpiece that will soon be dominating the television landscape.
