As John Oliver made very clear last night on Last Week Tonight, whether you’re watching hours and hours of network dramas and sitcoms, or simply tuning in to see your favorite football team play on Sunday, if you’re watching TV at all, there’s a very good chance that you’ve seen an ad for DaftKings or FanDuel. In their commercials, these daily fantasy sports sites promote the idea that “anyone can be a winner” and make thousands of dollars by playing with them; the companies explicitly stress that that what they’re doing isn’t gambling.
However, as Oliver breaks down the facts about these sites and reveals the true statistics regarding daily fantasy sports, it becomes more and more clear just how dishonest these companies are and that, despite their claims and a major legal loophole, what they’re doing is most definitely gambling. Check out the segment from Last Week Tonight below, which features random (but hilarious) references to Moneyball, Amy Adams, and Isla Fisher, not to mention some pretty terrific cameos in the fake commercial that Oliver creates in the video’s closing minutes.
Additionally, if you haven’t seen it yet, Oliver also opened last night’s Last Week Tonight with a monologue that pretty much sums up what everyone in the world has been feeling and thinking after Friday’s horrific terrorist attacks in Paris. Watch his fantastic and honest speech in the expletive-filled, NSFW video below:
