Great Uses of Songs on TV: Lady by Styx on “Freaks and Geeks”

Lady by Styx is used as a touching ode to Lindsay from Nick on Freaks and Geeks, and it’s kind of corny really since you get this feeling that Lindsay really doesn’t know how to react. It’s obvious that Nick is trying to be different, to be a little more tender and sensitive, but Lindsay just looks a little creeped out, and for good reason since most guys at that age would probably say “yes” if she asked them if they wanted to make out. But obviously Nick is wanting something deeper, something more meaningful, but is going about it in one of the clunkiest, clumsiest ways possible. There are moments when you can use songs to drive home the point you want to make to someone, but your timing has to be just exact or it won’t work the way you want it to.

In this case Nick is kind of off the mark. His sentiment is great and the idea that he and Lindsay could share something deeper could be possible but the act doesn’t seem to sit well with Lindsay, who looks like she might want to be anywhere else. Some women just don’t go in for the big gestures and candlelight that can make others swoon. Plus there’s a time and place for all of it and in the basement just doesn’t seem like the best bet most times. Romance on this level needs to be built up to, not just sprung on someone without any warning whatsoever. Plus Nick’s approach to it seems just a bit creepy.

And one other thing, particularly for guys that have aspirations of sweeping their desired female friend off of her feet. Make sure she feels the same way about you before going to these measures. There are various ways a guy can find out just how into them a woman is, but unless you know taking these kind of measures to let the woman know how you feel could kind of backfire and send them running the other way rather than wanting to be embraced and made to listen to how much you think about them all the time. That’s creepy. In fact that’s the kind of next-level creepy that gets a person the wrong kind of attention in high school and can stay with them for a long time after. Maybe it seems sweet to some people and heartfelt to others but it’s a major turn-off for a lot of people to be asked to come down to the basement and then be presented with candlelight and a partial serenade that makes assumptions about how the other person feels.

That kind of thing is what makes people avoid guys like Nick since he takes things a little too quickly without thinking about it. Just the look on Lindsay’s face seems to indicate that this moment was not what she had in mind when she came over, no matter if she likes Nick that way or not. Sometimes less is a lot more.
