Ranking the Top Five Wes Anderson Movies

Wes Anderson was born in Houston Texas, on May 1, 1969, although he now lives in Paris. He is a director, actor, producer, and screenwriter. He is best-known for creating films that have a narrative and visual style. This award-winning director has worked in the film industry since 1992 and has established himself as one of the most successful and creative directors of the current day. Many of his films have received great acclaim and achieved significant commercial success. His most recent film ‘Isle of Dogs’ is set for release on March 23, 2018, and Anderson has already won a Silver Bear for Best Director for this film. Here are five of the top Wes Anderson films.

5. The Darjeeling Limited

Wes Anderson directed the 2007 comedy-drama film ‘The Darjeeling Limited’ and co-wrote it with Jason Schwarzman and Roman Coppola. It stars Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwarzman, Amara Karan, Anjelica Huston, and Barbet Schroeder. It won an award for Best Comedy at the 2018 Movies for Grownups Awards. It was also relatively commercially successful as it grossed £35 million from a $17.5 million budget.

4. Fantastic Mr. Fox

This film was a double first for Wes Anderson as it was his first film adaptation and his first animated film. It is a 2009 stop-motion animated comedy that is based on the novel of the same name by Roald Dahl. Anderson directed the movie and co-wrote it with Noah Baumbach. It starred George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Jason Schwarzman, Michael Gambon, Owen Wilson, and Willem Dafoe. The voice of Weasel was voiced by Anderson. Following this animated movie, Wes Anderson received a Special Filmmaking Achievement Award from the National Board of Review.

3. Moonrise Kingdom

‘Moonrise Kingdom’ is a 2012 coming-of-age film that Anderson directed and co-wrote with Roman Coppola. It is an eccentric love story that starred Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward. Others who starred in this movie include Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Bob Balaban, Tilda Swinton, and Jason Schwartzman. It grossed $68.3 million from a budget of $16 million. This film won Two American Film Institute Awards and a Gotham Award.

2. The Royal Tenenbaums

This 2001 comedy-drama was directed by Wes Anderson who also co-wrote the film with Owen Wilson. The movie starred Danny Glover, Anjelica Huston Gene Hackman, Bill Murray and Gwyneth Paltrow. The story is about three gifted siblings who enjoyed success in youth but failure in adulthood. It is told in a literary narrative. Gene Hackman won a Golden Globe for his performance in this film and the movie was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The film was also a commercial success as it grossed $71.4 million from a budget of $21 million.

1. The Grand Budapest Hotel

This is the film for which Wes Anderson is most famous. Despite being a relatively low budget movie made with $25 million, this 2014 comedy film grossed $178.4 million at the worldwide box office. Anderson was the writer, director, and co-producer of the film. It starred Ralph Fiennes, F. Murray Abraham, Matthieu Amalric, Adrien Brody, and Willem Dafoe. The movie won multiple awards including Academy Awards for Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. It also won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture- Musical or Comedy.
