After watching the first six episodes of Scandal, the one thing I can say is that you don’t say no to Olivia Pope. And apparently, ABC feels the same way, as they’ve given the latest Shonda Rhimes vehicle a renewal for a second season.
There’s no word yet on the number of episodes ordered, but season one had a brief seven episodes to its name. Considering that leading lady Kerry Washington, awash in critical raves for her first regular TV role and performance, has a healthy screen career, I wouldn’t be surprised to see another abbreviated season behind Grey’s Anatomy.
In play, too, is the fact that the first season will be available on DVD beginning in June. The brevity of the first season, then, becomes an asset, as more people can get their hands on the episodes and catch up before the next season begins. Scandal has been remarkably consistent behind Grey’s, having a soft-ish debut and only dropping .1 in the following five episodes. It may be a case not of people not liking the show but of depressed springtime ratings and people not actually seeing the episodes, something that could be solved by early DVD availability.
With Scandal‘s renewal, only a handful of other ABC shows are left wondering about their fate. Among them are fellow midseason replacement GCB, procedural Body of Proof, comedy Last Man Standing, and fellow Shondaland creation Private Practice. The latter has been rumored to be on the edge of a final season renewal, though nothing is official yet.
The season finale of Scandal airs next Thursday at 10:00 on ABC. You can read a review of last night’s penultimate episode fro Leigh Raines here.
