Sherlock’s Martin Freeman Will Star in FX’s Fargo

When casting someone to play an insurance salesman from North Dakota, I wouldn’t have thought of Martin Freeman, despite the actor’s many talents. But he has indeed been cast in FX’s new show taking on a William H Macy-esque role, if you’re comparing it to the original film. According to Deadline, Freeman is a salesman whose life is shaken up by “mysterious stranger” Lorne Malvo, who is going to be Billy Bob Thornton in the show.

Though the show will not directly mimic the plot of the original movie, it will have some other similar sort of “true crime” story, and the Cohen brothers are indeed attached as producers. A Bones writer is penning the script while Adam Bernstein of Breaking Bad and Californication is directing the pilot episode.

Obviously one of the most memorable aspects of Fargo was the decidedly midwestern accents of everyone involved. Will Freeman have to go way outside his comfort zone and change his tone? I don’t know if I’ve ever heard the man attempt an American accent before, let alone a super midwestern one. If I had to guess, he’ll stay his British self, which is probably fine since he’s so likable.

What do you think about what you’ve heard regarding FX’s Fargo so far?
