If you’re a fan of Fox’s popular sing-off series, you’ve no doubt been following the contract negotiation rumors surrounding American Idol’s number one judge. Well, Fox has released information regarding Simon Cowell’s future with American Idol and the network in general.
According to the report, this season will be Cowell’s last on Idol, as he leaves the judging table to take up the reigns of another Fox show: The X Factor. I’ve personally never heard of this X Factor show, but according to Fox, it has a global audience of 500 million that spreads over 17 countries.
“I’m thrilled that we have put a date on the launch of the U.S. version of THE X FACTOR, and delighted to be continuing to work with FOX,” said Cowell. “We have a fantastic relationship, a great team and are all very excited about this.”
A little research of the current broadcasting versions of The X Factor have revealed to me that it seems to be another version of American Idol. Rumors have been circulating since early last year that Simon Cowell had plans to launch the series after his Idol contract had ended, the reasoning being that his current contract with Fox prohibits him from launching any series that would be a direct competition to Idol.
A quote from Mike Darnell, President of Alternative Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company:
“We have had a very successful relationship with Simon Cowell for many years, and we’re absolutely delighted to continue our relationship with him. THE X FACTOR has been a massive success around the world, and we can’t wait to bring it to the U.S. in 2011.”
I’m not sure if I’m ready for yet another singing competition, but I am sure of the fact that the incoming audience from Idol could bring in millions of viewers for The X Factor.
