Supernatural Slide-Show: Most Memorable Standalone Episodes

There’s two types of episodes that Supernatural can do very well: one is the mythology episodes that focus on the running threads throughout the show and the various seasons, and the other is the monster-of-the-week or standalone episodes.

Often, these standalone episodes have fun guest stars or a self-contained story that typically wraps up by the end of the hour.  Yet, Supernatural is rarely a procedural like so many other shows because even the standalone episodes contain elements of mythology.  I consider standalone episodes to be one that deals with a monster-of-the-week or is a neatly wrapped one-week story that may still contain a few threads of long-time character or mythological development.

It’s hard not to get sucked in to the mythology of this show, because often the mythological elements will span an entire season or even longer and will be grand and fantastical with intriguing character arcs, but there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a fun independent episode once in a while.  After all, the first season of Supernatural was primary built on the monster-of-the-week/standalone episodes.  Occasionally these types of episodes can go awry or are easily forgettable, so I’ve put together my picks for the best of the best among this bunch.  These are the episodes I enjoy watching time and again, whether they contain mythology threads or not.  They stand on their own merits as an hour of good television.

Feel free to share your thoughts or your own picks in the comments below.  Did I forget your favorite standalone episode?  Let me know!
