When you’re a teenager, life (and your outlook on it) can be pretty unsteady. You have to deal with tests, peer pressure, hormones, body image, and thoughts of your impending leap into the adult world, all the while trying to find people to connect with on a meaningful level. It’s a time of uncertainty and of potential, so you tend to look for constants wherever you can find them, in order to make the rest of it not seem so bad and to help you get to where you want to go. However, when The Carrie Diaries debuts, Carrie Bradshaw will be without one very important influence, a loss that will have reverberations from here on out.
After losing her mother recently, Carrie’s in a decidedly down place; her father doesn’t know how to be there for his daughters like he needs to be and her sister Dorrit has started to rebel, taking things that don’t belong to her and becoming much more combative. It’d be a lot for anyone of any age to take, let alone a sheltered teenager from Connecticut, but the series premiere of The Carrie Diaries finds things looking up for her in both her personal and professional lives. Upon her return to school for the new year, she draws the curious glances and well wishes from people who know about her mother’s death, but the biggest deal is when new bad boy Sebastian knows of her existence and expresses his sympathies in front of Carrie’s “rival” Donna.
Elsewhere, once Carrie heads into the city for her internship at a law office, she has an altercation with Larissa, a woman from Interview Magazine who wants to shoot her purse – the same purse, once belonging to her mother, that Dorrit inadvertently got nail polish on. After Carrie doctored it up and turned it from a traditional bag to something much more quirky, though, it became a piece that stood out and could open up a door to a future that she didn’t think was possible.
The series premiere of The Carrie Diaries airs Monday, January 14th at 8:00 on The CW, with a repeat of the pilot at 9:00 and again on the 17th at 9:00. You can check out previews for the show here and here.
Should Carrie pursue Sebastian? How do you think her time with Interview will go? Can she and Dorritt make amends and be there for one another?
