NBC has officially released The New Normal, Ryan Murphy’s “controversial” comedy about a gay couple looking to adopt a baby who eventually meet a woman they’d like to become their surrogate. The show, which becomes the third NBC fall comedy to get premiere before the official series premiere date (following Go On and Animal Practice), has drawn the ire of One Million Moms and was recently pulled by an NBC affiliate in Utah for its content. Last season, another NBC show (The Playboy Club) had a similar pre-premiere fate, being dropped from an affiliate and having its content debated, though it only made it three episodes before being pulled.
The New Normal stars Andrew Rannells, Justin Bartha, Georgia King, Ellen Barkin, NeNe Leakes, Bebe Wood, and Jayson Blair. It’s the fifth show in total to be given an early look this season, following its NBC companions and FOX’s The Mindy Project and Ben & Kate.
The New Normal will have its broadcast premiere on Tuesday, September 11th at 9:30 on NBC. In addition to the show’s Hulu debut (below), the pilot is currently available on NBC’s website.
Will you be watching The New Normal this season? What are your expectations for the show, considering the topic and the talent behind it? Do you think the controversy surrounding the show is justified, or is it all very, very overblown?
