Golden Globe nominee Anna Friel has been cast in The Vatican, Showtime’s pilot from Paul Attanasio (House M.D.) and director Ridley Scott (Blade Runner). Friel will play Kayla, the rebellious party girl younger sister of Cardinal Duffy and someone actively going against all norms of the Catholic church. Given her proximity to the church and the damage her actions could have for her sibling’s chances of becoming Pope, something tells me that she’ll be facing an ultimatum in the near future: give up your wild child lifestyle or suffer the consequences.
Described as a “contemporary genre thriller about spirituality, power and politics,” The Vatican stars Emmy winner Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) as Cardinal Thomas Duffy, the Archbishop of New York whose progressive leanings and enigmatic personality have proven to be divisive within the church. Co-starring alongside Chandler and Friel are Matthew Goode (A Single Man) as Papal Secretary Bernd Koch, the current Pope’s closest confidante, and Sebastian Koch (The Lives of Others) as “dark prince of the Curia” Cardinal Marco Malerba, the Vatican’s Secretary of State. Production on The Vatican, one of three pilots in contention at Showtime, begins later this year.
Most known for her role as Charlotte Charles on Bryan Fuller’s Pushing Daisies, Friel has appeared on the likes of Public Enemies, Without You, and Neverland.
Will you watch The Vatican, should it make it to series? How long will Kayla go against the church before her brother feels the need to intervene? Who else would you like to see join the cast?
