Big Bang Theory: The Evolution of Sheldon Cooper

Fans of “The Big Bang Theory” have watched the characters evolve throughout the series. Sheldon Cooper, played by actor James Parsons is the nerdy theoretical physicist who also happens to be the nerdiest smart guy on the air. His character has evolved in some remarkable ways that have kept us entertained throughout the years. Here is how Sheldon has evolved since the first airing.

A cold and socially inept nerd

Sheldon will always be a nerd. He’s super brainy but for the first few seasons he was socially clueless and didn’t get the gist of humor or the need for emotional interactions in people. His first encounter with Leonard was an interview with Len as the potential roommate. Upon approval, the two would sign a social contract that stipulated the rules of the house. Violation could result in a termination of the agreement. To Sheldon, this was as close to interacting with people as he could manage.

Sheldon was as quirky as they come. His ideas of social interaction involved spouting facts and showing everyone else how intellectual he was. His first meeting with Penny was a bit awkward as he met his new neighbor. Leonard wanted to get to know her better and Sheldon was more concerned with starting the new “Battlestar Galactica.” He argues with Leonard and tells him that the only chatting either of them do is online and this is obviously his preference.

Sheldon meets Amy Farrah Fowler and the journey begins

Sheldon had trouble understanding romance and the natural instincts people follow that lead to sexual relations. He referred to it as “coitus” and really didn’t see the point.

When he first met Amy, he was skeptical until they started talking. She was his match intellectually and she proved that she was as emotionally closed off as he. He was intrigued. Penny was taking them on a date and she tried to get the two of them talking but it was obvious that neither were big talkers. Their interactions were stiff and clinical with limited emotion.

As Amy, his new girlfriend became friends with Penny, her character evolved. As she became more socially aware and adept, she realized she was in love with Sheldon. It was Amy who helped him to begin to understand the benefits of exploring human emotions. Falling in love and having sex were topics he avoided for a few years, but she eventually wore him down. We began to see more tender moments with the couple and Sheldon came around to understand and value romantic love with his partner. The first time they cuddle was sweet and a long time in coming.

We see another change as he admits that he “likes” her just as she is

When Sheldon tells Amy he loves her she has a panic attack.

We finally see him without his denial of emotion. He wakes Amy up at midnight just to say Happy Birthday. Now his romantic side is in full bloom and the couple finally consumates their relationship.

Sheldon’s character has matured in front of our eyes. His evolution has been slow and steady. It’s given us a great deal of entertainment with highs and lows. He’s finally starting to understand the need for human interaction along with the benefits.
