Everything We Know About Aaron Sorkin’s Molly’s Game

Molly’s Game is a drama film that is both written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. This is Sorkin’s directorial debut and the movie is set for release on November 22, 2017. The film is based on memoirs written by Molly Bloom in a book called ‘Molly’s Game: From Hollywood’s Elite to Wall Street Billionaire Boys Club, My High-Stakes Adventure in the World of Underground Poker. It tells the story of her life and how she switches from being a talented young skier who had once hoped to ski in the Olympics to a successful entrepreneur.

Molly works as a cocktail waitress before she quickly rises up in the social circuit and gets involved in organizing underground poker games. She is investigated by the FBI when it surfaces that there is a connection between the poker games and the Russian mob. Molly then starts her own high-stakes poker game that grows to an international competition.

The Cast

Representing Molly Bloom in her teenage years is Samantha Isler, though the lead role of Molly as an adult is played by Jessica Chastain. Idris Elba takes the other lead role in the movie and Sorkin has commented that having both Elba and Chastain in the same movie is a dream pairing. Molly’s father, a clinical psychologist, is played by Kevin Costner.

The rest of the cast is made up of a combination of big names and potential stars of the future for whom this is their first movie. Cast members include Brian d’Arcy James, Michael Cera, Bill Camp, Chris O’Dowd, J.C. MacKenzie, Claire Rankin, Madison McKinley, Jeremy Strong, Graeme Green, and Bill Camp, amongst others. The cast was decided at different stages throughout 2016.

The Production

In 2014, the rights to the feature film adaptation of the book were bought by The Mark Gordon Company and Mark Gordon himself announced he would produce the film. To adapt the book into a screenplay, Aaron Sorkin was hired and an announcement was made in January 2016 that this would also be his directorial debut. Working for Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Changes were then made to the plans as Amy Pascal came on board to produce Molly’s Game and Sony decided to exit the movie in May 2016. The film’s Chinese and US distribution rights were then bought for $9million by STX Entertainment. Pascal Pictures and Entertainment One are also part of the production team.

Toronto, Canada, was chosen as the location for shooting the movie and filming began on November 9, 2016. On February 9, 2017, production of this movie concluded.

Initial Reviews

The full movie is yet to be seen but there are already comments and reviews circulating regarding the release of a trailer for the movie. Some people have noticed that there are similarities in the style to Previous movies written by Sorkin, such as ‘Steve Jobs’ and ‘The Social Network’. Others have commented that Molly’s Game has a style similar to that of ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, directed by Martin Scorsese.
