The Books

The movie is based on a series of books written by Patrick Ness, a British writer who was born in the United States. There are three books in the series and Ness planned for them to be a trilogy from the start. ‘The Knife of Never Letting Go’ is the first book in the series. It is narrated entirely by Todd and has the theme of flight. The second book, ‘The Ask and The Answer’, is themed around tyranny and is narrated by both Todd and Viola. The final book of the trilogy is ‘Monsters of Men’. The theme of this book is war and it is narrated by Todd, Viola, and The Return.

Patrick Ness also wrote a book called ‘A Monsters Call’ which was adapted into a film that was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2016. Tom Holland had a small uncredited role in this movie. It had a limited release in the United States from December 23, 2016. It was widely released on January 6, 2017. ‘A Monster Calls’ received critical acclaim for the story, the direction, the visual effects and the performances.
